What sort of person is most likely to succeed as a real estate professional?

Real estate is really, really tough. Not physically tough, but mentally gruelling. It’s not for the faint-hearted. Sorry, there’s no other way to say it.

But, having said it, we should also add that it can be the most rewarding career imaginable.

Our research shows that certain people are most likely to do well;

  • A person with no previous experience selling real estate
  • A person with a stable employment history
  • A person who owns or has owned real estate
  • A person who is of excellent character
  • A person with a strong desire to succeed
  • A person with a willingness to learn
  • A person with a positive, optimistic, can-do attitude to life

We also know that candidates who have worked in face-to-face roles with the general public learn quickly and adapt easily to the work of a real estate agent. For example, people who have had a successful career in retail sales, as a company representative or in some types of service jobs will often excel in real estate - they love to work with and serve others.

Open HomeAlthough there is an award rate of pay in NSW that governs salaries and allowances for the real estate industry it is not enough to get most people excited.

Ours is a performance based industry. The better you are at serving the needs of your clients the more you will earn. The more clients you serve in an excellent fashion the more you will earn and the more your clients will refer you to their friends, relatives and colleagues.

As a general rule, however, we would expect a successful real estate salesperson working in the Macarthur and following our sales systems to earn $100,000 per annum within 3 years. Many in our industry earn $200,000 or more every year.

What could you do if you were enjoying an income like this?

What will the training involve? Is there a cost?

Firstly, there is no cost, except the cost of obtaining a certificate of registration.

We will teach you what it takes to succeed. So long as you stick with what you learn from the use of our sales systems your income will grow each year and your career satisfaction will soar.

Our sales system consists of four modules;

You will learn how a real estate agency generates business, how we create a database of contacts and serve the needs of those considering the sale of their property.


You will learn how a sale occurs, how we manage open homes and feedback to clients, how we negotiate the highest and best price for each property and how we manage the legal requirements of a sale including contracts.


You will learn what our clients need during the sale process and how to deliver the level of service that makes our company such an outstanding success in the community.


You will learn how to present our range of service products to property owners assisting and supporting them as they make some difficult choices before putting their property on the market.

We teach the first module, Prospecting for new business, from your commencement. Additional modules are taught as you reach competence with each preceding module. Our object is to turn out fully trained, professional property agents and the foundation element is proper and thorough training.

What happens during the recruitment process?

The first step in the recruitment process is for you to consider what you want.

Once we receive your application we will be in touch with you within 3 business days. We will respond in one of three ways;

  1. You may receive a phone call from us asking you to attend an interview to discuss your application and the possibility of a future career with Prudential Real Estate; or,
  2. You may receive an email from us inviting you to attend one of our information evenings where we will provide further information about a career in real estate and provide you with a chance for a quick interview with one of our senior staff; or,
  3. You may receive an email from us thanking you for your application and indicating we do not think you would be a success with our company

Part of the interview process will be a short aptitude test (don’t worry, no maths questions). We may also ask you to attend more than one “second interview”. And we may ask you to attend a group interview with our sales team.

This may seem like an exhaustive procedure. And it is! But it’s done for very good reason.

Firstly, we want only the best possible candidates to work on our team. If you were already a member of our team you would appreciate this fact. The better we all are as individuals the better the team will be as a whole.

Secondly, we don’t want to start the wrong person by accident and have them discover later that they don’t like working in real estate. After all, they will probably be leaving a good job to join us and may not be able to return to that job after leaving real estate.

So, I hope you don’t mind if we seem overly thorough.

A few things to consider before you apply

Certificate of Registration

In NSW you cannot work in a real estate agency without first obtaining a Certificate of Registration. This is a document issued by Fair Trading NSW after you have successfully completed a basic education course about the practice of real estate. Most courses last for a week or less. Some are conducted on weekends. And sometimes, Prudential Real Estate facilitates these courses in our training rooms at Campbelltown.

We can assist you with this process. The cost varies from one training company to another but is generally $400.00 to $700.00.

Working hours

As a real estate salesperson you can only be rostered on to work five days out of any seven. One of those days will always be Saturday which may mean you will occasionally miss family and social events. This is part of the price you pay to be a success in real estate.

The hours can be very long, particularly in the early years and it is not unusual for days to begin at 7.00am and end at ten in the evening. There is a tendency for new salespeople to work too many hours.

Our system requires an enormous amount of dedication. The primary focus, however, is on actions completed, not hours worked.

As in most professions a mastery of time is critical. Truly successful real estate achievers have plenty of free time. They have mastered their time-management skills.

You will need the wholehearted support and approval of your family.

Real estate can be very demanding and puts pressure on family life. The bonds need to be strong to withstand such pressure. By focussing on the ultimate benefits of a successful career your family will feel part of the team.

Your image

Real estate agents often suffer from a poor public image. You will need to separate yourself from this perception by learning to be a professional from day one. It will take to time to earn respect and trust from members of our community. Our System is based solely on Client Benefits - Following our system will quickly enable you to win the respect of your clients.


In real estate, the sale is not so much when someone decides to purchase a property. The true sale is when a person grants you the right to represent them as their agent for the sale of their property. What you sell is yourself, your Company and the service and benefits our agency can provide to the seller.

The sellers are your clients and their interests are of paramount importance. By remembering this principle and practising a policy of total client care, you will receive many recommendations. The better you care for your clients the more successful your career will be. A struggling real estate agent is often a real estate agent who has neglected their clients.

Michael O’Sullivan together with his wife Josephine first opened a real estate office in Campbelltown in 1988 under the name ROBERT R ANDREW. That office was located at 47 Queen Street on the corner of Langdon Avenue.

In 1992 they changed their trading name to STARR PARTNERS. Michael was a founding director with the Starr Partners franchise group and helped open almost a dozen real estate agencies under this name.

In 2011 Michael and Josephine struck out on their own changing their name to PRUDENTIAL REAL ESTATE. Today there are 5 offices in the Prudential Real Estate group with more to come over the next few years.

After almost 30 years Michael and Josephine still work at the office where it all began at 47 Queen Street, Campbelltown.
