Heckenberg, located 36 km south-west of the Sydney CBD, is part of the local government area of the City of Liverpool. It is bordered in the north by North Liverpool Road, in the east by Elizabeth Drive, in the south by Mannix Park and Heckenberg Avenue, and in the west by St Johns Road.
The area was named after a family who settled there before 1840. The family of eight brothers and one sister purchased land in the Liverpool area. Some of the brothers became popular woodchoppers and, one of them, James William Heckenberg, was the Australasian Woodchopping Champion at the turn of the century. The property was included in the Green Valley public housing estate, which was subdivided in 1960.
Today, Heckenberg is an established residential area. It is a peaceful, community-oriented suburb that will appeal to families with children. One of its community service programs is Heckenberg Connections, which has been in operation since 2013. It offers a wide range of services, including a small library, distribution of food, information and referral services, free wifi and use of laptops, and more.
Heckenberg also has a community centre, located on the corner of Whitlam Park next to Heckenberg Child Care Centre. This facility offers a large and a small function room that can host many types of events.
It has a public school and daycare is also not a problem as there is Step Ahead Child Care Centre and Care for Kids.
There are sufficient local shops, including an 8 Stars Asian Grocery and Ko Supermarket. For larger shopping options, residents can easily access major shopping centres in the nearby suburbs of Miller or Green Valley.
The suburb is regularly serviced by public buses operated by Transport NSW.
